Dynamic processes leading to covalent bond formation for [S.sub.N]1 reactions
Article Abstract:
The experimental efforts to kinetically resolve the individual molecular events associated with the [S.sub.N]1 reaction mechanism are discussed. New insights are gained into the nature of these reactions with advances in both electronic structure theory and condense-phase reaction dynamics theory as well as in experimental probes of reactions on the femtosecond and picosecond time scale.

Excess electrons stabilized on ionic oxide surfaces
Article Abstract:
The structure and electronic properties of excess electron centers generated at the surface of insulating oxides are described. Spectroscopic techniques are combined with accurate quantum chemical calculations for identification and elucidation of the microscopic aspects of electron trapping with reference to alkaline-earth oxides and MgO in particular.

The dance of molecules: New dynamical perspectives on highly excited molecular vibrations
Article Abstract:
Frequency-domain spectroscopy is used to obtain new anharmonic modes, which are born in bifurcations or branching of normal modes at highly excited molecular vibrations. The correlations are being made with reaction rate theories, condensed phase systems and motions of electrons in quantum dots.
